Gozarabadi translating "The Anatomy of Story"

2 Mar 2011 14:29
The Iranian translator of art works, Mohammad Gozarabadi is translating "The Anatomy of Story" a book by John Truby. According to the translator the book analyzes scenarios in details.
IBNA: Talking to IBNA, Gozarabadi said:" As a screenwriting teacher I always look for new ways to instruct the structure of storytelling. In this process I started from Syd Field's three act structure and continued with more complete versions of Robert Mckee. "The Anatomy of Story" by John Truby is the sequence of my translations of teaching scenario writing in Iran which is more practical than my other books."

He added:" "The Anatomy of Story" analyses the details of scenarios thus it is an individual one. The book holds new subjects including "Story space" and "Symbol web" which are hardly seen in other books even the chosen subjects are new."

He went on to say that John Truby screens the story space and its structure in details. One of the book's new points is the chapter of "Premise". The concept's previous explanations were mostly about the story's theme. But Truby introduces it as the most condensable form of recounting. This method helped me in teaching.

In this method Truby has presented a new explanation of Premise; he condenses the stories and calls it as Premise. The point is a great start for instructing the structure of stories. When you start recounting a story with its premise in fact we can start from its most general structure and reach the details; moving from the whole to details.

Gozarabadi underlined:" The method is great since the listener will soon get to know that the story is good for working or not. Counter to the previous methods we learn the story's basic and origin very soon so we save up time as well."

The other main chapter is the "Story space" he said, adding that Truby believes that the protagonist lives in a space in which the story occurs. The space of story differs from reality; which means that the world existed before we entered it but on the other hand, in fictions the characters are created firstly and then the physical space is created.

The added:" The physical world makes the story to go as it develops the protagonist as well moreover it conveys the concepts. So every part of the stories should be processed and all details should be connected."

Talking about the "Symbol web" he added:" The whole story can have a symbolic formation. We do not create the symbols, they existed before us. We sometimes use them with their old definitions and sometimes with their new explanations.

"The Anatomy of Story" is being translated and will be released by the publication of Farabi Foundation.
