24 Jan 2010 12:13
“Iran’s footsteps in Spain” written by Reyhaneh Kianifar was published by Paye Danesh Publications and in collaboration with Iran-Spain Friendship Association.
IBNA: the presence of Islam in Spain over 800 years reveals the peerless role of Iranian scholars in this land. The golden age of Spain is undoubtedly under the influence of works by Islamic-Iranian scholars, especially of the historical works of Iranians that could be found in all gardens, palaces and houses as well as manners of Spanish people and feel the spirit of Iranian history there.

Such dispersion of Iranian experiences and knowledge has sure made grounds for friendship between the two nations which – historically had cultural, social and economical exchanges and this made Spain the first country to seek political relations with Iran.

Iran is the land of freemen and the world is indebted to Iran’s history:
The world today has passed thousand years of experiences and incidents, and one of history-making countries is our Iran – the country known in the world to be the land of freemen and scholars. Some of the world’s historians know Iran to be pioneering civilization and founder of the world.

Before the emergence of Islam, Iran has been a grand imperial. When the Greek and Alexandrian sciences entered Iran, new and important scientific centers were built in Madaen, Jondishapour and RioArdeshir. We shouldn’t forget the fact that Iranian people had enormously improved in sciences like astronomy, medicine, music and mathematics and had built great Pahlavi and Greek libraries within or without temples before above scientific imports.

Sasani period had distinctly improved in science:
For instance, we can refer to Hakhamanashid Iranians’ interest in astronomy. Astronomical rules were first born in the capital of Hakhamaneshis and was kept as the most secret science of human beings for two thousand years, that is to the end of sixteenth century A.D. very much like today’s physics. After the flowering of Islam in Iran, Iranians took a great part in Islamic sciences.

Before Islam, Iranians were familiar with different kinds of science like philosophy, mathematics and medicine; after the translation movement of Baqdad in Islamic period, Iranians had a great share in producing books of translation and compilation and spent their wealth in the path of book-making, translation, and encouraging scholars and writers.

Iranian translations sought their way to Spain:
In 1310 A.D, these translation books opened a new gate for the Europeans through Spain; the translation of scientific books continued in 12th and 13th centuries and so Iran became a bridge to convey science to Spain and then to Europe. Iran is not an unknown land for the Spanish, neither is Spain for the Iranians – from literature and ideology to nature and politics.

The current book deals with the footsteps on Iran and Iranians in Spanish civilization. The researcher says that the compilation of this book has been suggested by Hassan Shafti who has been Iran’s ambassador in Spain for almost five years. The propellant of this task was to rewrite the history of common ancient values between Iranian and Spanish people since both countries, despite their geographical distance, are very close in terms of manners and cultural delicacy and this has been very tangible for the author throughout his travel to Spain.

Iranian footsteps are visible in Spain:
According to Kianifar, there were various political, economical, cultural and scientific ties between Iranian and Spain. And according to historians, Iran’s footsteps are visible in the history and culture of Spain. During the eight century rein of Muslims in Adalous, Iranian culture has been one of the pillars of Islamic culture and the effective presence of Iranians in different fields of science, music and literature in Islamic period of Andalous has been affirmed by all historians.

She has gone through reading various books and articles and found herself facing a deep and vast sea whose leaving was as difficult as sweet. She says the books in this field have been disperse and vague and time was passing, yet she did not seize work.

The book is written in 8 chapters. Foreign relations, Iran’s influence on Adalousi culture, philosophy, mysticism, music and literature, medicine, historiography and geography, mathematics and astronomy and arts and architecture are among different part of this book.

Mithraism in Spain, Manavi religion, Iran-Spain sociopolitical relations in Shah Abbas Safavi period, Abdolfatah Garmroodi’s meeting with a Spanish man, Iranians and cultural exchange, Iranian culture within Spanish culture, Farabi, Ibn Sina, Ibn Tofeil and Ibn Sina, Ibn Roshd, the difference between Ibn Sina and Ibn Roshd, mysticism in Andalous, Zaryab and his reaching Spain, Zakaria Razi, the grandure of Iranian muslim scholars in Europe, historiography in muslim Spain, and the effect of Iranian arts on the world techniques are among other subjects surveyed in this book.
