21 Jun 2012 15:41

Essential of Medicine a book by Abolfazl Habish Alteflisi, edited by Zahra Parsapoor, was the winner of the 20th Book of the Season Award in the field of Medicine. The book's editor Zahra Parsapoor said that her main concern was introducing the book to the scientific society.

IBNA: Parsapoor said that she was glad that the book had won the Book of the Season Award and added: "The least positive point of such awards is the introduction of works in which many efforts have been made. The choice vanished my main concern, which was the book's introduction to the scientific society."

Talking about the book, she added:" The work is an ancient text in east and west medicine and a works which was written in Persian by a 6th century scholar; interesting indeed."

The book holds three main sections; the first part is about the diseases, the symptoms and causes while some information has been presented for their cure as well. The work's main feature is its order and charts, she noted.

The second chapter is about simple medicines while the 3rd chapter presents information about compound medications. The medicines are listed alphabetically presenting data about their production style and even the expire date.

The exact sources have been included and even the name of different physicians have been presented as well.

Talking about editing the book she added:" When I started to edit the book, it wasn’t been taught in the traditional medicine field yet and Professor Iraj Afshar introduced the book to me as a source of traditional medicine. Some five years were spent for the book's preparation and publication."

Editing the book, I tried to consider both its literary and medical aspects. The book's editing process was supervised by Dr. Isfahani; an expert of traditional medicine. The work is indeed a unique book since it has considered both the features."

Moreover she complained about the lack of sources inside Iran and said:" An institute should be established in the country in which a researcher can find foreign sources or works which are unavailable in Iran."

The book holds a collection of the scientific sayings of some noted Iranian, Indian and Greek physicians including Galenus, Discuridos, Avicenna and Ibn Masuyeh.
