Emdadian: Publication of art books necessary to promote art culture

22 Jul 2012 15:13
Yaqub Emdadian, painter and illustrator, believes that publication of visual arts is necessary for the promotion of art s and this should be done by cultural institutions as artists themselves cannot afford it.
IBNA: Yaqub Emdadian said: "Introducing artists in a wider range is necessary as the gallery spaces exhibiting their works are really limited spaces."

He added: "The number of visitors to a museum or gallery that exhibits the artists' works is few whereas a book in larger numbers of circulation can present these works. In my opinion only book publication can familiarize the mass of the people with an artist."

Emdadian went on to explain that publication of biographies of the artists can familiarize the readers with some aspects of their mental structure.

"An audience can understand a work of art better by reading the artist's biography as biographies usually reveal the social situation and procedures an artist has gone through before creating a work of art. To the consensus of researchers, this knowledge is a necessity for understanding art," he added.

Reacting to the question who should take charge of publishing such oeuvres, he said, cultural institutions and centers in charge of management and promotion of culture in Iran should attempt to publish such works, because the publication of artworks requires certain conditions. For instance, a special and expensive paper is required and should be made under certain print conditions. This will make them expensive and beyond what the artists can afford.

Emdadian added that he has no decision regarding publishing his paintings or drawings as he cannot afford it.

Reactign to the question whether he will ever publish a biography of his own as an Iranian painter, he said: "So far I have not written particularly on this and have scattered notes. I may do this in the future."

Yacub Emdadian is a veteran Iranian painter and artist. He has run the Hoor Gallery for 30 years and has worked as art expert and designer and manager of a number of biennials and exhibitions within and without the country.

In 2009 Emdadian held the exhibition titled 'A Vent to Colors: Review of Sohrab Sepehri Artworks". Last year a book of the same title was published and made these works accessible to the public.
