Zahra Mohammadi, professor of Russian language and literature at the University of Tehran tends to translate a complete collection of poems, stories, and plays of Russian romanticist poet Alexander Pushkin to Persian. She is done with the first volume and the rest will be completed in three years.

IBNA: Mohammadi said: “One of my current occupations is translating the body of Pushkin works to Persian. I have made a contract with Farhang NashreNo for presenting the translation of his works in 10 volumes.” 

She added that the first volume is completed and will be soon delivered to the publisher. The whole project will be completed in three years. 

Mohammadi continued: “The first volume includes Pushkin’s novels and stories. The second volume presents his dramatic works. And the third contains his verses and poems.” 

She added: “In 2005 when I was a university student I had a bilingual collection of his poems in a book titled ‘The Traveler’ published by Barg-e Zeytoon. It contained 40 pieces of Pushkin’s poetry.” 

Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born in May 1799. He was a Russian author of the Romantic era who is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Born into the Russian nobility in Moscow, Pushkin published his first poem at the age of fifteen, and was widely recognized by the literary establishment by the time of his graduation. 

Zahra Mohammadi was also a lecturer of ‘Saadi and Pushkin’ Conference held last week. In her speech she compared Pushkin to Ferdowsi in terms of the services he has done for his nation and national language. “Before Pushkin, Russian language was confined in the houses and French was spoken as the dominant language. Pushkin clarified Russian and attempted to promote it through his works.” She also mentioned the role of literary magazines of that era in familiarizing Pushkin with Persian language. 

By far scattered translations of Pushkin’s oeuvres are published in Iran, some of which date back to half a century to 70 years ago. For instance, Masoud Karimi’s translation of a story of Pushkin had been published in 1948 in a literary magazine. 

Mohammadi finally mentioned that she is also translating the poems of a contemporary Russian poet and photographer called Alik Yakubovic entitled as ‘And So God is a Great Painter’ to be released by Nashre Nicka.
