Reza Najafi at session "English Literature Analysis": Shakespeare was an English Language Builder
At session "English Literature Analysis", Reza Najafi said: "One of Shakespeare's fantastic methods is verbal play in prose and poetry. He is one of English language builders and many writers have later used his particular vocabulary in their works." IBNA: At Session "An Analysis of the History of English Literature" of the "Literary History of Nations" held Tuesday evening with presence of Amir Ali Nojumian at the House of the Literati, Reza Najafi said: "English Literature began in the seventh century with Beowulf which is an epic in verse. After that some epic works were written in fictional style in the form of Picaresque Romances."
He also emphasized upon the role of Shakespeare on the passage from Classicism to Romanticism and regarded his breaking of the Three Unities as one great achievements in the passage from Classicism.
He added, "The novel Robinson Crusoe was written in the early 18th century; in this period, Daniel Defoe was an effective writer who left about 250 works."
Najafi also referred to the tendency for equilibrium and clarity in English literature and said: "This tendency caused interest in Realism in England; hence schools like Naturalism and Surrealism did not form in this land."
He also referred to the causes for the emergence of Sentimental Literature in England: "One of the founders of Romanticism in Europe is England and in some cases the English are even pioneers of this school; it is interesting to know that in a country with an established school of Realism, a school like Romanticism can emerge."
He also posed the question as why should a movement like Sentimentalism evolve in a country with old Classical conventions and Rationalism; and he further explained: "One reason for public interest in Romantic Literature was that they were fed up and frustrated with their lofty ceremonies and rituals which led them to sentimentalism and another reason is the emergence of the middle class. Of course, English literature also gains another achievement in this period which is called Gothic Literature."
Najafi continued by referring to some prominent figures of 18th century literature and said, "Among prominent figures of this period one can mention Thomas Hardy – with his Naturaist work 'Jude the Obscure', Robert Louis Stevenson – with his 'Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde', Bronte sisters – particularly Emily Bronte writer of 'Wuthering Heights' – and Jane Austin with the well-known 'Pride and Prejudice'."
