  Ashoura incident: History's Saddest Tragedy

The tragedy of Imam Hussein's martyrdom is the greatest tragedy in the history of humanity which has not been seen or heard of in any other nations in the world.
IBNA: A review of the history's saddest events brings us a list of incidents like the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which killed over 200,000 within seconds, the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 killing as many as 3,000 in China, the San Francisco Conflagration, the World War II, the killing of 1400 Hajis in the 1990 bridge collapse of and world wars, which are all among the most tragic events in history. Now, why does Imam Bagher call the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his followers the greatest tragedy in heavens and the earth and has stated there is no such calamitous tragedy in the universe?

Some of the direst features of Ashoura event are as follows: in Ashoura God's greatest proof on earth, i.e. Imam Hussein, was martyred. The perpetrators of the murder of Imam Hussein (AS) in the incident were the progenies of the greatest enemies of Islam at the time of its establishment, i.e. Yazid and Ibn Abusofian. It must be admitted that the factor which deepens the incident's gravity is that the Umayyad troopers were mostly members of the corps of Imam Ali and Imam Hassan, rather than being among the Sham corps.

Those who murdered Imam Hussein knew him very well and were aware of his moral magnificence and divine highness, which were repeatedly mentioned by the Imam in his sermons.

Slayers said that one of the main reasons for killing Imam Hussein was the hatred they had towards his father, Imam Ali, knowing about Ali's efforts for the establishment of Islam. What is more, many of them were previously favored and graced by the Imam Ali!

Furthermore, only two terms have been used to refer to the quality of Imam Hussein's killing: slaughtered and decapitated from his scruff. According to historical documents, at the moment of his martyrdom, Imam Hussein was dressed with over 90 sword and spear wounds on his body which should be added to the wounds caused by the horseshoes that trampled his body and the cut of his ring finger and his sacred head.

Imam Hussein's first aim for his uprising was inviting people to righteousness and shunning wastefulness.
Killing righteous people is one of the most disastrous tragedies in the society. The Holy Quran has frequently severely censured Bene Israel for killing their prophets. In Chapter Borouj, Quran mentions the burning of 70 prophets by Bene Israel and curses their killers by reading as: "Death to the torturers who own pits (of fire), huge ignited fire! When they were sitting next to it and what they did to the believers (with calmness and brutality), they watched them (burn) and had no excuse for their deeds but the believers' belief for God, the Hamid the Aziz, who rules the heavens and the earth and is the witness of all things! And it is interesting to know that Imam Hussein mentioned this event in one of his talks with his sister Hazrat Zeinab (pbuh).

The Ashoura incident has been introduced as the gravest tragedy of all times perhaps because no nation in history has exhibited such ignorance and decadence in such a large scale in which people gave fatwas, prepared a military outfit, armed themselves, wore masks on their faces and invaded the court of the Prophet Muhammad and his children. This has never been seen and certainly will never be.

Now, to display the severity of the tragedy, let us take a second look at the list of history's bitter events. Can any of these features be found in any of these events?
