Khalatbari: "Unfortunately Iranian children are accustomed to Zorro, Robin Hood"
Noted Iranian children's writer and the managing director of Shabaviz publishing Institute Farideh Khalatbari believes that children shouldn't read translations. In our country, every child should be an Iranian first. Unfortunately the children are accustomed to foreign heroes including Zorro and Robin Hood more than knowing Rostam and Siavash. IBNA: Farideh Khalatbari talked to IBNA about the problems of the publication of children's books saying that the field holds double difficulties compared with the other publishing fields. Children's books need to be attractive since a child firstly chooses a book by its beauty and then the context comes in the 2nd phase.
A book's attraction is based on its illustrations, graphic, fonts, binding, paper and the decoration of the books, thus these elements can't be omitted from children's books; however many publishers fail to work on the book's graphics and fonts and choose the worst paper, she added.
Khalatbari added:" Shabaviz publishing institute uses different methods for making a book attractive; we use U.V as well as glossy and matte cellophane for the cover. However the additional decorations come out too expensive."
If a story holds the ability to grow up with the child, new comprehensions will be gained as the child grows older. But if the book is written in one level, such a result is failed to be gained, she added.
Layered stories allow the children to learn news things each time they read the book; moreover they will enjoy reading and will be encouraged to read more books. Thus the phase of selecting a story is significant in the cycle of children's books' publication, the author said.
She went on to say that the high expenses of illustration and the expectations of Iranian illustrator have made the publishers of children's books to release translated or adult's books. In fact, in Iran children and adolescent's compiled books have turned into an expense which has no income.
In other news, she added: "International illustration awards bestow fame to Iranian illustrations in international levels which indeed has added to their expectations. Considering all these problems, Shabaviz publishing company has revived illustration in Iran. Currently the institute releases its works with original Iranian illustrations."
Farideh Khalatbari believes that children shouldn't read translations. In our country, every child should be an Iranian first, she said and added:" Raising a child with a foreign culture will make him confused. Unfortunately the children are accustomed to foreign heroes including Zorro and Robin Hood more than knowing Rostam and Siavash."
