The House of Literati held a session on criticizing "A comprehensive dictionary of epidemiology". The book's translator and compiler Kiumars Nasseri said that finding equivalents is a significant work in compiling a dictionary and added:" Groups should be formed to evaluate the usage of scientific equivalents; accordingly we can expand the terms which are accepted by the readers."

IBNA: The session was held on Monday, May 28, with the attendance of Kiumars Nasseri, Davar Siadat, Azim Akbar zadeh and Ali Asghar Alizadeh (manager of Gap publications).

During the session, the critics mostly emphasized on statements, equivalents as well as the book's structure and criticisms were expressed for selecting the terms and equivalents which were explained by Nasseri.

Azim Akbar zadeh talked about the book's benefits and called it a precious work. He said:" I believe figures like Nasseri should motivate the young generation to work and research."

He added:" Science doesn’t grant wealth as it only presents dignity. However every university professor should at least try to present a useful book."

Moreover the other critic Davar Siadat expressed gratitude to Nasseri for observing lexicography basics and his faithfulness to the text saying:" It would have been better to write the book's source on its cover rather than informing the readers, in the introduction, that it is a translation."

In other news, Younes Keramati presented some issues about the book's structure, the principles of its aesthetics and using capital alphabets in its English terms. He said:" Using the word "comprehensive" makes the readers imagine that the translator and the writer's aim was not to ignore an expression in the field's terms. In fact the term "comprehensive" doesn’t reveal that for every word the dictionary has presented an equivalent as well as a complete explanation which present every entry's meaning perfectly."
Furthermore Nasseri talked about his research and work background and presented some explanations about the book saying:" I believe language is a tool for humans' communication which indeed should be clear."

In 1967, when I was studying epidemiology in the University of Tehran, I received a booklet which made me think to compile a book, he added.

He went on to say that the dictionary isn’t his first book. Some years ago I translated a book which was released by the press of the University of Tehran.

Moreover he said that finding proper equivalents is the main problem of lexicography and added:" Different scientific texts are found in foreign sources and the Iranian compiler should find the best terms for the foreign words."

He went on to say that the book totally holds 2120 words of which 180 weren't in the original text and I included it in the dictionary.

Kiumars Nasseri is a member of the US Public Health Institute and California Cancer Registry.

"A comprehensive dictionary of epidemiology" was chosen as the Book of Year in 1390.
