Three high school teenagers have finished a book on the geopolitics of Iran’s northern sea.
IBNA: Entitled as the Geopolitics of the Caspian Sea, the book stresses that the name Caspian should be used in Persian to refer to the sea instead of Khazar which is the frequent name used when talking about the sea in Persian language.

After the introduction chapter, the book provides a brief history of the sea and its energy reservoirs in the period after Islam and the contemporary era. It also casts a look at the future of the region and draws up discussions about the issue.

The third chapter, entitled as the Geopolitics of the Caspian Sea, encompasses various topics like the region’s political, social and security status, its legal regime and geopolitical aspects.

Chapter 4 considers Iran’s role in the region’s developments and the last chapter draws conclusions of the discussed Speaking to IBNA, Javad Mohsen Nia, the book’s scientific editor, said there is a lot of sensitivity about the correct use of the Gulf’s name as the Persian Gulf; likewise, “we should never forget that the sea located on Iran’s north is titled as the Caspian Sea not the Khazar Sea.

“Formerly, a semi-nomadic Jewish clan used to reside in the region who were called the Khazars and made a lot of investments in there,” he added, “however, before them, a group called the Cossacks lived in the region; so the sea is the Caspian Sea, indeed.”

Originally Iranian, Cossacks lived in the region over 4,000 years ago, much earlier than the Khazars; however, the Khazars managed to fixate their state in the region by changing the sea’s title to the Khazar Sea by their massive promotional activates, Mohsen Nia went on to say.

He further insisted that even in Persian the sea should be referred to as the Caspian Sea.

Today, Iran owns only 13% of the sea and the rest of it is governed by other countries like Azerbaijan, the US and the UK!

Mohammad Shirzad, Amir Hussein Safari and Reza Nagahani have written the book together. The three high school teenagers come from Torbat Heidariyeh city. Their research won country’s student research award last year. Javad Mohsen Nia is the writers’ master at school and has had the book published by Pole Outlook (Cheshmandaz Ghotb) Publications. 2,000 copies of the book are published in Iran.
