The Ancient background of Persian Gulf in the historical books
There has been a great deal of various studies done on the Persian Gulf, its historical background, legal and strategic issues as well as other related subjects. What is presented here, is a summary and abstract of researches implemented about the Persian Gulf. IBNA: The name of Persian Gulf has roots in ancient history and it has never had any other name at any period of time. Among the various islands of the Persian Gulf, the most significant one of all is Hormuz Island located in the Strait of Hormuz which is of high strategic value as well. Besides the Persian Gulf islands its ports must be also added. One of these ports is "Siraf” where has been disappeared in the transition of history, but in the past and during centuries, it has been one of the important commercial centers in Persian Gulf. Evidence and historical documents, brings the history of the port, back to the Sassanid era.
The Persian Gulf Bibliography can only be considered as an entry used for a wider and functional awareness of historical, geographical, political, social and economic resources of Persian Gulf, and it doesn’t contain all the books in this field.
Historical studies of Persian Gulf The book by Dr. Mohammad Bagher Vosoughi entitled: "Ethnics Migration History in the Persian Gulf (Hormuz Moluk) ;( Shiraz, Fars Encyclopedia Publishing) is one of the valuable historical researches to know the background of Persian Gulf region residents. Beside that, the researches should be taken in to account which were about the historical issues of Persian Gulf during Afsharid and Zandiyeh eras and have been themselves the main subject of several significant books.
"Persian Gulf Political and Economic History in the Zandiyeh and Afsharid eras“ written by Asadpour H ,and Published by Humanities Development & Research Institute; “Karim Khan Zand and the Persian Gulf ",a research by Faramarzi A., as well as the important book entitled :" Ditches in Kharg Island (Persian Gulf) ;written by Willem Flora, A. Translated by Abolghasem Serri (Tous Publication) are considered as good examples of valuable cross-border historical studies.
Especially, Sadid Al-Saltine’s book called "Bandar Abbas and the Persian Gulf" should be mentioned here which is a rare and specific historical source for understanding the Persian Gulf and some of its historical issues. This book has been corrected and printed by Ahmad Eghtedari (Book World). Some other books like "Persian Gulf" written by Arnold Wilson, translated by Mohammad Saeidi, as well as “The History of Persian Gulf and the Neighboring Countries"; the fundamental research by Dr. Mohammad Vosoughi (SAMT) should also be considered.
No doubt, the book entitled:" Events Narrating of Persian Gulf, Iran's history section, written by J. J. Lorimer with the translation of Abd Al-Mohammad Ayati enjoys high level of value in sense of source biology. This book consists of two parts, , the first part includes the Persian Gulf history, the lands and the surrounding cities and the second part includes the geographic features of the region.
The Issues has been discussed in this work include, Iran's internal situation from Nader Shah up to Nasser Al-Din Shah, Iran's relations with various countries, the present world powers in the Persian Gulf and their competition over the region, foreign companies in the Persian Gulf, Trade in the Persian Gulf and etc. The book translation has been published by Iranology Foundation.
In the book entitled:"Persian Gulf" (The Office of Cultural Research), Dr. N. Takmilhomayoon has studied the Persian Gulf from the historical and geographical perspectives and H. Nourbakhsh, in his book called "Navigation in Iran" (Cultural Research Office) discusses about the history of navigation in Iran and points out to Iranians’ marine travel, exploration travels of ancient seafarers of Iran, Iranians’ innovations and Iranian navy in the Persian Gulf throughout history as well.
Persian Gulf historical documents and maps The Book named: “Description of Persian Gulf in the historical maps “is an important source published by Iranology Foundation. This book is written by a group of researchers who are all professional in the Persian Gulf history and sources. MH Ganji, M.B Vosoughi, J. Safiniya, F. Faridi, AH Nouri have shouldered the compilation of this book.
In this work, It has been tried to add another leave to the facts of Persian Gulf based on the well-known credible geographical documentaries so that its historical facts along with the description, as well as historical and geographical notes will be offered. The mentioned book has three parts: The 1th Part entitled mapping schools, Islamic and European fields, and some of their profiles; the second part is called maps and their descriptions, and attachments forms the third section.
International and Political Studies Office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also published an important book entitled "Selected Documents of Persian Gulf". In this book documents related to political, social, and economic movements of and the Persian Gulf coastal countries, as well as the colonial influence in the region has been studied.
In the 2 volumes book entitled "historical maps and old Atlases of the Persian Gulf"(Political and International Studies) , Mohammad Reza Sahab has also collected the Old Persian Gulf maps using the translation of English, Arabic, French and German documents. In the same way, we should refer to the book entitled “The Historical Documents of Iran and Portugal Relations, "which contains the Persian Gulf issues too. This book is written by Mahdi Agha Mohammad Zanjani and is printed and distributed by Services Research and Documentation Center.
Two other books are worthy to be recalled here. First " Farsi, Arabic, and Turkish documents about the Persian Gulf in the National Archive of Portugal " compiled by J. Ghaem Maghami and “the Persian Gulf Name Documents, an ancient and eternal heritage”, the significant work of Mohammad Ajam (Evin publication). In this book the author has explored thoroughly the history of Persian Gulf name, maps and remained ancient documents in this regards and the role of colonial agents has been discussed as well.
Geography of the Persian Gulf and its islands and ports Extensive information about the Persian Gulf besides its natural, economic and political situation can be found in various sources including the book entitled:"the Geography of Persian Gulf” the joint work of Simin Armaghan and Bahram Azad (Abizh Publication). "The Geography of Persian Gulf Iranian Islands; Hormozgan province” is another efficient book produced by Armed Forces Geographical Organization. In this book, the latest status of Hormozgan islands is described and, has been associated with the statistical tables, charts and several maps, as well as colored photos of various visions of the islands. The first volume of this collection is dedicated to Shidor, Farror and, Farorgan Islands, and another volume is especially dedicated to Lavan Island.
"Historical Geography of the Persian Gulf, the Persian Gulf name alongside the length of history “,is the significant and credible work of P. Mojtahed Zadeh which has been published by Sayeh Roshan publication. The brief but clarifying book called: "Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf" written by Hossein Nourbakhsh (Office of Cultural Research) should also be recalled in this regards. In this book Nourbakhsh investigates Iran‘s ports and commercial centers within the Persian Gulf in the past and present.
"Qeshm Island: the uncut oyster of Persian Gulf " a book by Ali Bolukbashy (Office of Cultural Research) is a clarifying research. The same is true with the well-known book of Jalal Al-e Ahmad entitled: “Kharg in the orphan Persian Gulf" is a useful monologue which aware the reader of the island’s issues happened many years ago. The book has been published by Association of Cultural Works and Honorable figures entitled " Qeshm Island’s Horizons , people, villages, ports, port-villages , dams, cultivation, navigation, and fishing " also provides useful knowledge to the reader. This book is written by Mahmud Zand Moghadam and recently its first volume is published.
