The books were chosen from the works of 15 publishers namely Aghamiri, Bazi Qeseha, Hoz-e noghre, Shahid Beheshti University, Zekr, Rasm, Zeytoon, Sarzamin Ahouraee, Shasousa, Shabaviz, Saberin, Qadyani, Ketab-sara, Gohar Danesh and Yasavoli.
Talking about the books, the managing director of Shabaviz publication Farideh Khalatbari said:" In order to attend the competition, this year 105 publishers sent some 500 books for us of which we picked up 24."
She added:" During the previous editions many Iranian books were shortlisted for the final level but they weren’t chosen as winners. But this year I think we have a chance to win; particularly two books of Yasavoli and Aghamiri which were indeed too beautiful."
The competition jury will focus on books as objects of utility. Legibility and factors such as size, weight, the color of the paper and its contrast to the script are all factors that are reviewed by the jury, which means that the criteria include not only design but also concepts and perfection of technical workmanship.
Last year a total of 569 book titles of 32 countries submitted their works for the competition. Juries from Germany, Australia, Belgium, Portugal, Czech and Sweden reviewed the books and 14 works were awarded. A book from Netherlands bagged a special prize.
The competition is organized by the Germany Book Art Foundation and is held in Leipzig annually in March since 1963. Frankfurt joined the competition in 1991 since when the selected books are being displayed annually in Leipzig and Frankfurt Book Fairs.
The Leipzig Book Fair displays the books under their country's name however the Frankfurt Book Fair presents the books according to their subject.
Leipzig Book Fair is slated for 15 to 18 March 2012 while Frankfurt Book Fair will be held from 10-14 October 2012. The selected Iranian books will be displayed at both the fairs.
