Kindi; the forerunner of writing Islamic philosophical works
In the meeting "Kindi's place in Islamic philosophy", Dr Yousef Sani, the translator of Kindi's philosophical pamphlets, considered him the first muslim philosopher and writer of philosophical works. He said: His pamphlets are the foundations for the creation of philosophical works. Kindi created the Islamic philosophy's meaning-creating language and with the translation of Greek and Syriac philosophical works he paved he way for the creativities of philosophical minds. IBNA: The meeting "Kindi's place in Islamic philosophy", was held on March 2 in Book City. In this meeting Dr Seyyed Mahmoud Yousef Sani, member of the scientific panel of Iran knowledge and philosophy institute, made speech.
Yousef Sani first said: Kindi is not only a philosopher but also a mathematician, musician, and astronomer. He wrote about 280 works which Ibn Nadim categorized into 16 groups. In music he wrote a voluminous book "Al-Kitab Kabir fi Al-Talif" and 5 pamphlets. Farabi used this book as a source in his musical research.
He added: Unfortunately the greater deal of Kindi's works has been destroyed and now only 46 of his pamphlets have been identified. The reason is the malignancy and vilification of some who defamed him in the eyes of "Motavakkel Abbasi" which resulted in the seizure of his library. His books were moved to Basra and were later returned to him but most of them were destroyed.
The translator of "Fundamanetal questions of philosophy" added: Many books and essays have been written on Kindi's work by western writers and rerearchers. Up until 1932 we had no information about him. German orientalist "Reiter" first found 29 of his pamphlets in a library in Istanbul and later Egyptian researcher "Abou Reideh" corrected the pamphlets and published them in two collections. The pamphlets that I have translated into Persian are from the first volume of these collections.
He added: Kindi was born in the city of Kind at the time of Haroun's reign and in his lifetime 5 Abbasi Khalifas ruled.
Yousef Sani said: Kindi's financial status enabled him to collect some Greek and Syriac works and translate them into Arabic. He localized the ideas and was the first person to use an Islamic philosophical language.
He added: It appears that Avicenna was influenced by Kindi's work. Familiarization with Aristotle and plato's work became possible with Kindi's translations. His translations were not merely word for word translations but he had managed to find equivalent expressions for the jargons in the works.
Yousef Sani considered Kindi the first Islamic philosopher who managed to put down his ideas in pamphlets: He has a work "Fi al-Aql" which was greatly received in the middle ages and later by western thinkers.
Yousef Sani considered "Alkendi" by "Peter Adamson" the greatest work written by a westerner about Kindi and said: He is one of the greatest western thinkers in Kindi studies and has translated a work by Kindi with another western writer which is soon to be published.
In the end he said: Unfortunately Iranians are not very familiar with Kindi's work and that may be because he is an Arab, but it is necessary to know him as a Muslim philosopher. Id : 64039 |
