Professor of SBU:

"An organization should supervise translation of academic books"

3 Jul 2012 17:18

Professor of Shahid Beheshti University Islam Nazemi said that the translations of Internet technology (IT) books require a supervising organization.

IBNA: Talking to IBNA about the branch of IT, he said:" During the past recent years, the field had a significant growth in Iran. Moreover many activities are made in its research section and many research plans have been carried out which are released as scientific articles."

He added that IT's connection with other academic fields including electricity, computer, management and communications, made it develop in universities. Talking about the field's sources he added:" Not many Persian sources exist in the field and the Persian translated books usually do not convey the context fully."

Talking about the problems of the translated books he added:" The books hold many English phrases and terms which are used so in the translated books as well."

Since the field's contexts change soon, I think that using original books will be more useful, he added.

He went on to say that researchers and students should be able to read the books and articles in their original language. Translated books may be used for basic information. In fact one of the necessities of studying in a field like IT is being fluent in English.

He then talked about the field's original sources which exist in the country's universities saying that many e-articles and books exist in the universities.

Every technology which enters the country needs to become regional, since we have our own specific culture, politics and economics, he noted.

He went on to say that many organizations and institutes translate different books but we can't use them in scientific works.

Nazemi said:" The fields of IT and computer share many courses and they need to be practical. However Iranian universities are weak in the matter."

In foreign countries, the universities gain some income through the projects which are handed over to the centers, which in Iran it is not so, he added.

The lack of IT graduates and employing them cause certain problems which finally lead to the lack of scientific sources.

Moreover not welcoming compilations is another problem he said and explained:" Writing a book takes time and has many responsibilities. Moreover the writers are supported economically thus the professors don’t consider writing."

He finally said that the translated books should be more logical and an organization should supervise the works.
