Discussed in the specific meeting on “Application of Theory in History”

  Inattention to Research Methodology Course in the Universities of Iran

In the specific meeting on “Application of Theory in History” a faculty member of the History Department of Orumieh University criticized the academic staffs’ inattention to research methodology course in the Universities of Iran; and said: today, in the university of Iran research methodology course is taught by professors who have written no book or specialized article in this field.
IBNA: The special meeting of the Month Book of History & Geography was assigned to “Application of Theory in History” held with the presence of Dr. Mostafa Mehraein, Alireza Malaei Tavani, the Faculty member of the history department of the University of Orumieh, Zahir Siamian as the meeting secretary and Habibullah Esmaeili, the chief editor of Month Book of History & Geography in the House of Literati of Book House Institute. 

In the meeting held in continuation of the special meeting series of Month Book of History & Geography, stating the issue Malaei Tavani added: one of the country’s fundamental problems in regard to application of theory in history refers to the academic staffs in this field. 

He continued: although research methodology receives special attention, as one of the major principles of theories in sociology and psychology, there has done no serious and effective action in this regard. 
 
Malaei Tavani said: I believe a serious measure has to done to reform the current condition and the teaching methods should also be reviewed in order for us to materialize the functional aims of theory in history.

The faculty member of history department at Orumieh University said: On the other hand, the teachers need to be familiar with their role in developing elite scholars and historical researchers.
 
In other parts of his words regarding the role of theory to historians and sociologists he explained: in historiography individuals used to explore the given field’s related events and documents and through which they followed their works, while sociologists theorized through merging all the existing recourses ,meanwhile, history was just considered as a realm in which the theories were tested. 
 
Malaei Tavani reminded: using historian’s materials, sociologists evaluated the existing changes in a given society and theorized about it; meanwhile history enabled them to prove or reject their theories.

Referring to the time at which psychology connected to history, he reminded: after the social, political and cultural evolutions occurred in the world which resulted mostly in generation of ideas, this connection got further expansion.

Malaei Tavani added: one of the most obvious of these evolutions occurred in the French Revolution following which historiography and clarifying started, its examples can be observed in Conditional Revolution of Iran.

Expressing that a historian can use sociologists’ theories in writing history said: this will result in generating different theories which can serve as a basis for the studies of many researchers, who takes an immediate look at the history.
 
In another section of his speech the faculty member of the history department at the University of Orumieh explained about creating a gap between historians and sociologists: unfortunately historians follow traditional approach to the history and never seek to create new theories, sociologists instead approach to the issue holistically and thus are the pioneer in theorizing and creation of new theories.

Malaei Tavani specified: If we are able to work using theoretical instructions in the field of sociology and research methods, lots of the vacuums seen in this field will be removed.

Following the meeting, Dr. Mostafa Mehraein, the lecturer of Imam & Islamic Revolution Research Center, a researcher and analyst in the speech about the ratio of history science to sociology, said: one of the key issues in this field is the ratio of reality to language which is discussed in various methods. 

He continued: I believe that history does not mean historiography; instead means the same social life for which to be understood, one must learn its language first.

Expressing that part of this speech is up to a historian Mehraein stated: talking about the existing realities is usually by public in a society, but some of the scholars present the more specialized things in the forms of books, Movies, archaeological works and etc.
 
He added: the speeches and cultures of every society, is indeed the society’s history at macro level, including public conscience, ideology, and semantic rules and systems; in fact people speak in the communities to give the life meaning. 

About application of theories in social life Mehraein also reminded: some theories say that the duty of historical texts is to solidate the culture of community, but what is occurred in today’s historical discussions and cultural systems is that how does the structure of this cultural systems form? 

The lecturer of Imam & Islamic Revolution Research Center in another section of his speech explaining that how a historian sees history, said: language is a tool without power and ability by which a historian writes about reality.
 
He reminded: If we accept that history is writing reality, then the question is which part of history is stated in the historiography, the answer is: in some historiographies only the kings’ biographies were written and the lives of people living within that community had given no importance or were ignored at all.
 
Mehraein emphasized: The social life of ordinary people is often overlooked, while mass life is valuable as well and must be attended because many of ideas and opinions have come from among ordinary people.
 
Specific session on "Application of theory in history” was held in the House of Literati at Book House Institute and by the effort of the Month Book of History & Geography on Wednesday, August 3, from 10:30 to 12:30.
