Solmaz Hadadian:

Shooting Under Fire useful for young photographers

5 May 2012 14:56
Solmaz Hadadian, translator of Peter Howe’s ‘Shooting Under Fire’ regarded the nonpartisan views of photographers and diversity of war scenes as the most interesting features of the book and asserted that it would be beneficial for all young photographers interested in shooting crisis and war scenes.
IBNA: “Shooting Under Fire: The World of the War Photographer” is the candid testimony and stunning photographs of the men and women who go into battle armed only with a camera to show warfare as it is and where it is.
The book is recently converted into Persian by Solmaz Hadadian and presented at the TIBF 25 by Revolution and Holy Defense Photographers Society.

“My personal interest in war and crisis photography and particularly my husband Saeid Faraji’s activity in this field made me translate the work,” she said.

“I became familiar with ‘Shooting Under Fire’ on Amazon when searching articles on crisis and war photography. In this book, ten leading combat photographers relate their experiences and memories. I knew most of them and was familiar with their thoughts,” Hadadian added.

Emphasizing on the necessity to provide war photography reference books, she said: “Although Iranian photographers have experiences in the Holy Defense, the new generation who tend to work in the field of crisis photography do not have access to any textbooks or sources.”

Hadadian mentioned nonpartisan views of photographers of ‘Shooting Under Fire’ as the most interesting features of the book and pretty beneficial for young photographers. There are many memorable statements in the book yet each photographer has their own philosophy and approach to the subjects.

‘Shooting Under Fire’ is published by Saqi and Revolution and Holy Defense Photographers Society.

In this volume, ten leading combat photographers relate incidents of horror, humor, bravery, and daring in locations from Vietnam to Haiti, Ramallah to Chechnya, El Salvador to Sarajevo, the World Trade Center to Afghanistan. In addition to the works of these talented photographers are iconic images, from the American Civil War to the devastation of the World Trade Center, that tell the story of the development of combat photography and the profound changes in warfare itself that have occurred in the last century and a half.

The 25th Tehran International Book Fair is being held at Tehran's Grand Imam Khomeini Prayer Ground and will run through May 12, 2012.
