Franz Kafka, Nazim Hikmet Ran, Frans Eemil Sillanpää, Nikolay Karamzin, Allen Ginsberg, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Larry McMurty and Otto Erich Hartleben are the acclaimed authors who were born or died on a day like today.

Franz Kafka
Franz Kafka was born on July 3rd 1883 and passed away on a day like this on 1924. He was an influential German-language author of novels and short stories. Contemporary critics and academics, including Vladimir Nabakov, regarded kafka as one of the best writers of the 20th century. The term "Kafkaesque" has become part of the English language. "The Trial", "The Castle" and "Amerika" are the titles of his novels. Most of Kafka's writing, including the large body of his unfinished work, was published posthumously. 

Nazim Hikmet Ran
Nazim Hikmet Ran(January 15,1902 – June 3,1963) was a Turkish poet, playwright, novelist and memoirist. He was acclaimed for the "lyrical flow of his statements". He was repeatedly arrested for his political believes and spent much of his adult life in prison of in exile. His poetry has been translated into more than fifty languages. He was the charismatic leader of the Turkish avant-garde, producing streams of innovative poems, plays and film scripts. He has been compared by Turkish and non-Turkish men of letters to such figures as Federico Garcia Lorca, Louis Aragon, Mayakovsky and Pablo Neruda. Although his work bears resemblance to these poets, his literary personality in unique in terms of the synthesis he made of iconoclasms and lyricism.

Frans Eemil Sillanpää
Frans Eemil Sillanpää was one of the most famous Finnish writers. He was born on September 16 1888 and passed away on a day like this on 1964. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1939 for his deep understanding of his country's peasantry and the exquisite art with which he has portrayed their way of life and their relationship with Nature". He won international fame for his novel "Fallen Asleep While Young" in 1931.

Nikolay Karamzin
Nikolay Karamzin, was born on December 12, 1766 and died on June 3rd 1826. He was a Russian writer, poet, historian and critic. He is best rememberd for his "History of the Russian State", which was a 12-volume national history. "My Confession"(1802),"Athenian Life"(1794) and "The Sensitive and the Cold"(1803) are among some of his other works.

Allen Ginsberg
Allen Ginsberg, born on a day like this on the year 1926 was an American poet and one of the leading figures of the Beat Generation in 1950s. He vigorously opposed militarism and materialism. Ginsberg is best known for his epic poem "Howl". He took part in decades of non-violent political protest such as Vietnam War. His honors include being the recipient of the National Arts Club gold medal and being inducted into the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, both in 1979. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1995 for his book "Cosmopolitan Greetings: Poems 1986-1992".

Marion Zimmer Bradley
Marion Zimmer Bradley born on a day like this on 1930 was an American author of fantasy novels. Many critics have noted a feminist perspective in her writing. She was the author of novels such as "The Mists of Avalon" and the Darkover series. She passed away on Semptember 25th, 1999 at the age of 69.

Larry McMurty
Larry McMurty born on a day like this on 1936 is an American novelist, essayist, bookseller and screenwriter. His works are predominantly set in either the old west or in contemporary Texas. He is known for his 1975 novel "Terms of Endearment" and his 1985 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Lonesome Dove". He is also the co-writer for the adapted screenplay "Brokeback Mountain", which won the academy award.

Otto Erich Hartleben
Otto Erich Hartleben was a German poet and dramatist from Clausthal. He wan born on a day like this on the year 1864. He is best known for his translation of Pierrot Lunaire. In 1900 he had resounding success with his officer's tragedy "Rosenmontag" (Carnival Monday). He passed away on February 11, 1905 in Italy.
