The world is also indebted to Turing's genius for the modern computer. It was clear that Turing had a remarkable mind from an early age. He taught himself to read in just three weeks. At his first school, the headmistress said, 'I have had clever and hardworking boys, but Alan has genius.' In 1954, he was found dead, poisoned by an apple laced with cyanide. This is the story of his life.” Turing was also a logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist. He was highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing a formalization of the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Despite these accomplishments, he was not fully recognized in his home country during his lifetime, due to his sexual orientation, and because his work was covered by the Official Secrets Act, a legislation that provides for the protection of state secrets and official information, mainly related to national security.     ]]> Technology and Science Thu, 15 Aug 2019 11:17:32 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/279608/alan-turing-the-enigma-man-explicates-english-genius-achievements Italian physicist’s ‘The Order of Time’ rendered into Persian http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/279615/italian-physicist-s-the-order-of-time-rendered-into-persian According to IBNA correspondent, Carlo Rovelli’s book which combines science, art and philosophy to demystify the secret of time has been translated into Persian by Mazda Movahed and released by Nashr-e No Publishing in 177 pages and 1100 copies.   ‘The Order of Time’ is introduced: “Why do we remember the past and not the future? What does it mean for time to “flow"? Do we exist in time or does time exist in us? In lyric, accessible prose, Carlo Rovelli invites us to consider questions about the nature of time that continue to puzzle physicists and philosophers alike.   For most readers this is unfamiliar terrain. We all experience time, but the more scientists learn about it, the more mysterious it remains. We think of it as uniform and universal, moving steadily from past to future, measured by clocks. Rovelli tears down these assumptions one by one, revealing a strange universe where at the most fundamental level time disappears.   He explains how the theory of quantum gravity attempts to understand and give meaning to the resulting extreme landscape of this timeless world. Weaving together ideas from philosophy, science and literature, he suggests that our perception of the flow of time depends on our perspective, better understood starting from the structure of our brain and emotions than from the physical universe.     ]]> Technology and Science Thu, 15 Aug 2019 08:58:44 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/279615/italian-physicist-s-the-order-of-time-rendered-into-persian New volumes of the Harrison’s medical textbooks in Persian due http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/shortint/279601/new-volumes-of-the-harrison-s-medical-textbooks-in-persian-due According to IBNA correspondent, Salahi, the author and translator of over 60 medical books and head of the translation project ‘Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine’ (2018) said that as one of the main medical references for professionals and students, the book is being translated into Persian in 12 volumes. “By now, the parts Immune-Mediated, Inflammatory, and Rheumatologic Disorders; Disorders of the Kidney and Urinary Tract and Disorders of the Respiratory System have been translated into three volumes and published by Haidari Publishing,” he stated.   “The translation has almost been accomplished and the work is in the process of typing and editing. But practices based on this assumption have not yielded results consistent with evidence-based practice.   Using the work of Wittgenstein, John Heaton challenges this notion of theoretical authority by showing how it is that children come to be initiated into speaking and perceiving meaning. ‘Wittgenstein and Psychotherapy’ argues for a new understanding of therapy as an attempt by patients to express themselves thereby showing and saying what they have been unable to see or say and accepting that things in the world are not as fixed as they assume.   Therapists, like writers, may describe what is witnessed but this is of a very different order from explanations. This book critiques the conjectural leap from descriptions to theoretical systems made by Freud and others, a scientism that continues to give false validation to the myth that understanding people is the same as being an expert on the mind and brain.”   The meeting for reviewing ‘Wittgenstein and Psychotherapy’ is scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at 3 to 5 p.m.   ]]> Technology and Science Mon, 29 Jul 2019 09:26:52 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/naghli/278904/wittgenstein-and-psychotherapy-to-be-reviewed-in-literati-house Iranian scientific book among Springer’s most visited http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/278034/iranian-scientific-book-among-springer-s-most-visited According to IBNA correspondent, ‘Autonomous Guided Vehicles’ has been co-authored by Mohammad Saidi-Mehrabad, a faculty member of Tehran’s Elm-o San’at University and Hamed Fazlollahtabar, a faculty member of Damghan University. Then the completed book was reviewed and was finally approved by the publisher. It took five years for the authors to complete the work. The book is introduced as: “A work which provides readers with extensive information on path planning optimization for both single and multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and discusses practical issues involved in advanced industrial applications of AGVs. After discussing previously published research in the field and highlighting the current gaps, it introduces new models developed by the authors with the goal of reducing costs and increasing productivity and effectiveness in the manufacturing industry. The new models address the increasing complexity of manufacturing networks, due for example to the adoption of flexible manufacturing systems that involve automated material handling systems, robots, numerically controlled machine tools, and automated inspection stations, while also considering the uncertainty and stochastic nature of automated equipment such as AGVs. The book discusses and provides solutions to important issues concerning the use of AGVs in the manufacturing industry, including material flow optimization with AGVs, programming manufacturing systems equipped with AGVs, reliability models, the reliability of AGVs, routing under uncertainty, and risks involved in AGV-based transportation.   ]]> Technology and Science Mon, 08 Jul 2019 11:53:12 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/278034/iranian-scientific-book-among-springer-s-most-visited Springer releases Iranian experts’ book on oil-paper insulation http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/278112/springer-releases-iranian-experts-book-on-oil-paper-insulation According to IBNA correspondent, “Quality Confirmation Tests for Power Transformer Insulation Systems” (2019) has been written by two Iranian academicians Behruz Vahidi and Ashkan Teimuri.      The book focuses on oil-paper insulation included in power transformers, especially for EHV and UHV transformers. In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, truth that is sorely lacking today. This book is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.   Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.   There are only so many things we can give a damn about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. In ‘The First Three Minutes: A Modern View Of The Origin Of The Universe’, the theoretical physicist Steven Weinberg explains what happened at the very beginning of the universe, and how we know, in this popular science classic. Our universe has been growing for nearly 14 billion years. But almost everything about it, from the elements that forged stars, planets, and lifeforms, to the fundamental forces of physics, can be traced back to what happened in just the first three minutes of its life. Weinberg describes in wonderful detail what happened in these first three minutes. It is a journey that begins with the Planck Epoch - the earliest period of time in the history of the universe - and goes through Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Hubble Red Shift, and the detection of the Cosmic Microwave Background. These incredible discoveries all form the foundation for what we now understand as the "standard model" of the origin of the universe. ‘The First Three Minutes’ examines not only what this model looks like, but also tells the exciting story of the bold thinkers who put it together. ‎‘The First Three Minutes: A Modern View Of The Origin Of The Universe’‎ in Persian has been published in 288 pages and 1500 copies.       ]]> Technology and Science Tue, 15 Jan 2019 12:46:47 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/270800/steven-weinberg-s-the-first-three-minutes-published Elsevier publishes Iranian geologist’s book http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/naghli/270354/elsevier-publishes-iranian-geologist-s-book According to IBNA correspondent, ‘Tectonic and Structural Framework of the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt’ is the latest volume in the Developments in Structural Geology and Tectonics series from Elsevier, Tectonic and Structural Framework of the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt is a collection of the most up-to-date research and developments in the unique tectonic and structural geology of the Zagros. Menuez had found his story: he proposed to photograph Jobs and his extraordinary team as they built this new computer, from conception to product launch.   In an amazing act of trust, Jobs granted Menuez unlimited access to the company, and, for the next three years, Menuez was able to get on film the spirit and substance of innovation through the day-to-day actions of the world’s top technology guru.   From there, the project expanded to include the most trailblazing companies in Silicon Valley, all of which granted Menuez the same complete access that Jobs had. Menuez photographed behind the scenes with John Warnock at Adobe, John Sculley at Apple, Bill Gates at Microsoft, John Doerr at Kleiner Perkins, Bill Joy at Sun Microsystems, Gordon Moore and Andy Grove at Intel, Marc Andreessen at Netscape, and more than seventy other leading companies and innovators. It would be fifteen years before Menuez stopped taking pictures, just as the dotcom bubble burst. An extraordinary era was coming to its close.     ]]> Technology and Science Tue, 01 Jan 2019 14:39:31 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/270586/fearless-genius-on-steve-jobs-available-in-persian First Persian book on Lev Vygotsky out http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/269961/first-persian-book-on-lev-vygotsky-out According to IBNA correspondent, the book has been compiled and translated by Dr. Sa’eed Shoja’ Shafti on the ideas and works of Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky who is regarded as the father of Russia’s (former Soviet Union’s) psychology who died at the age of 37. The back cover of ‘A Survey of Cultural-Historical Psychology’ reads: “Lev Vygotsky was a scientist who founded the historical cultural psychology which is centered on society, culture and evolution.” Vygotsky was the founder of an unfinished Marxist theory of human cultural and bio-social development. However, his main work was in developmental psychology and he proposed a theory of the development of "higher psychological functions" that saw human psychological development as emerging through interpersonal connections and actions with the social environment. In 1926-30 Vygotsky worked on a research program in collaboration with his students investigating the development of higher cognitive functions of logical memory, selective attention, decision making, and language comprehension, from early forms of primal psychological functions. The scientist’s international fame came  only after an eclectic compilation of partly rephrased and partly translated works of his and his collaborators’ (the members of his circle’s) works published in 1978 under Vygotsky's name as ‘Mind in Society’, first in the West: originally, in North America, and later, following the North American example, spread to other regions of the world.   This Persian book on Vygotsky’s work has been released by Qoqnous publishing in 322 pages.   ]]> Technology and Science Wed, 19 Dec 2018 13:25:16 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/269961/first-persian-book-on-lev-vygotsky-out Scientific foreign books to be published concurrently in Iran http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/shortint/269460/scientific-foreign-books-to-be-published-concurrently-in-iran In an interview with IBNA, Majid Ja’fari Aghdam, Director of the Pol Literary and Translation Agency spoke about his cooperation with a number of European and American publishing houses. “In a bid to initiate cooperation between Iranian publication market and some counterparts in foreign countries, on the other hand, we began to negotiate the issue with a number of prestigious scientific and academic publishers throughout the world, we could make them interested to publish their original books concurrently in Iran,” he said. Darwin spent most of that time on land investigating geology and making natural history collections while HMS Beagle surveyed and charted coasts.   He kept careful notes of his observations and theoretical speculations, and at intervals during the voyage, his specimens were sent to Cambridge together with letters including a copy of his journal for his family. Later, the scientist wrote his observations of the voyage in a travelogue which was later titled ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’.   The voyage laid the groundwork for Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. The subject of the ceremony is “presenting books with the aim of promoting reading among people” and also reviewing and highlighting important books of great impact on the society. Books on the psychology of success are among those in the recent years in which the Iranian audience has shown great interest, to the extent that in unpleasant situations in Iran the desire to read psychology books has been greater than for other types of books. They have even been able to draw audiences to reading who would not even read one book except curricula texts during the year. It is interesting that one of the well-known writers of psychology of success has been Donald Trump, the recent President elect of America. The question is which writers are feeding the Iranian audience and who is in charge of supplying the need of the society. Could it be possible to hope for a successful, dynamic and joyful society by relying on the opinions and views of people like Donald Trump? Or should we look at the popularity of these works with different eyes? It is interesting to know that Donald Trump’s translated works in Iran have been even more welcomed since his victory in the US elections. In the meeting books like ‘Think Big: Make It Happen in Business and Life’, ‘Why We Want You to Be Rich: Two Men - One Message’, ‘Think Like a Champion: An Informal Education in Business and Life’, and so forth were discussed.       ]]> Technology and Science Tue, 03 Jan 2017 17:45:23 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/243965/persian-translations-of-donald-trump-s-books-reviewed-in-tehran Noted Iranian mathematician Esrafilian passes away http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/243380/noted-iranian-mathematician-esrafilian-passes-away ]]> Technology and Science Thu, 15 Dec 2016 08:25:21 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/243380/noted-iranian-mathematician-esrafilian-passes-away Prominent Dutch Iranologist’s work to be reviewed http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/243327/prominent-dutch-iranologist-s-work-to-be-reviewed According to IBNA correspondent, this event is from the series of meetings on Iran studies and Iranologists which will be held on Wednesday, December 14 at The House of Literati affiliated to Iran’s Book House with Mr. Floor in attendance. The book informs the reader of issues such as how to internationalize the universities, history of international education, favorable trend of international higher education, internationalization of higher education in Iran, etc., in seven chapters. General acceptance of the governments and the strategic orientation of the university administration to ‘internationalization’ indicate the degree of the importance of the idea and the policies taken in the field of higher education. Many of today’s managers of universities consider the international higher education strategies and activities beyond the means of access to the global market of higher education or academic development of prestigious university brands in the world balance.
