Through the dialogue between his two protagonists, Dowden offers well-known arguments in the field of metaphysics for positions on such topics as the finite nature of time, absolute versus relational time, and Zeno's paradoxes of motion.   The book draws on the theories of numerous philosophers, including Aristotle, Quine, Chrysippus, St. Augustine, Earman, Van Fraassen, Liebniz, and Hawking.   Bradley Dowden is professor of philosophy at California State University, Sacramento. He has written one text in philosophy, Logical Reasoning (Thomson-Wadsworth), and is a general editor of the online Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.     ]]> Technology and Science Tue, 15 Oct 2019 13:01:54 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/282230/the-metaphysics-of-time-rendered-into-persian ‎‘Stop Global Warming’ a book which raises founded concerns http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/282073/stop-global-warming-a-book-which-raises-founded-concerns According to IBNA correspondent, the book has been translated into Persian by Iranian environmental activist Parvaneh Ghasemian in collaboration with Nina Gharani and released by Akhtaran Publishing.   ‘Stop Global Warming: Change the World’ is introduced as: “Global warming threatens the planet, but people already have the technology to solve the problem. The real problem is that those in power and the corporations can't or won't act, so it falls to the only force that can challenge them: the six billion people of the world. Most books on climate change are devoted to showing the scale of the threat we face, but offer few solutions. Jonathan Neale's approach outlines the case for radical political change that alone can stop global warming, and asks: How do people organize to achieve this result?”   Jonathan Neale was born in New York City and now lives in London. He is the author of books of nonfiction and fiction for adults, though this is his first novel for young people. He has traveled in India, Nepal, Japan, Vietnam, the islands around Tahiti, Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, Venezuela, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. He has also sailed across the Atlantic in a small boat.   ‘Stop Global Warming: Change the World’ in Persian has been published in 382 pages and 1000 copies.   ]]> Technology and Science Sun, 13 Oct 2019 14:57:46 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/282073/stop-global-warming-a-book-which-raises-founded-concerns Medical book by Iranian Professor of McGill University released ‎ http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/282052/medical-book-by-iranian-professor-of-mcgill-university-released According to IBNA correspondent, ‘Alzheimer's Disease: An Eclipse before Sunset’ which describes the bitter experience of still an incurable disease has been translated by Rouhieh Fanaeian and released by Nokhostin Publishing in Tehran.   Almost a quarter of all people who live past eighty may develop Alzheimer’s disease. As they round the corner on middle age, many people worry about their own mental state. After all, the causes of Alzheimer’s remain unknown—and irredeemable.   But this doesn’t mean that one has no choice but to give up after the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia as in this informative and helpful resource, award-winning professor and researcher Dr. A-M. Ghadirian takes time and care to help both patient and caregiver understand the disease as much as possible in order to achieve the highest quality of life. Dr. Ghadirian discusses the aging brain, Alzheimer’s development, the risk factors involved, and how nutrition, exercise, and mental stimulation may or may not play a preventative role.   Dr. Ghadirian also discusses the social repercussions of a dramatically increasing elderly population, the popular attitudes across cultures toward aging, and how it affects caregiving.   This thoughtful and easily understood text provides hope through fulfilling the psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of everyone touched by this devastating and overwhelming disease. If you or a loved one is currently suffering dementia, let this resource be your guide.   Ghadirian is a former Director of Medical Education of the Montreal-World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.   He is Chairman of the Scientific Committee, American Psychiatric Association’s Quebec and Eastern Canada District Branch. West has been translated into Persian as a teamwork by Dr. Yaser Azzizi, Donya Nazari-Nia, Narges Ma’refati and Fatemeh Jahanshahi and released by Chehr publishing in 183 pages.   Present-day respiratory physiology stems largely from the explosion of ideas which took place during and after World War II. A number of the major players are still active, but the opportunity to prepare a personal history of this branch of medicine will soon be lost. In a sense then, ‘Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials’ offers an exceptional, even unique, opportunity. We are offered a first-hand chronicle of the advancements made in respiratory physiology in the course of this century by one of the principal figures in the field. The volume covers every aspect of the evolution of this important area of knowledge: morphology, gas exchange and blood flow, mechanics, control of ventilation, and comparative physiology. Some of the chapters are personal accounts of the development of respiratory physiology as observed by the author. It is hoped that what is lost in objectivity by this approach is more than made up by the captivating insights provided by the author into the process of scientific research and discovery.     ]]> Technology and Science Sat, 12 Oct 2019 15:08:22 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/282051/respiratory-physiology-describes-the-amazing-structure-of-breathing Springer, Emerald publish Iranian scientific books http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/naghli/281930/springer-emerald-publish-iranian-scientific-books According to IBNA correspondent, the books are ‘Industrial, Trade, and Employment Policies in Iran, Towards a New Agenda’ co-authored by Pooya Alaedini, a graduate from University of Tehran and Mohamad R. Maziar Publishing in Tehran has released the work in 384 pages.   ‘After the Earth Quakes: Elastic Rebound on an Urban Planet’ reads: ‘Earthquakes rank among the most terrifying natural disasters faced by mankind. Out of a clear blue sky-or worse, a jet black one-comes shaking strong enough to hurl furniture across the room, human bodies out of bed, and entire houses off of their foundations.   When the dust settles, the immediate aftermath of an earthquake in an urbanized society can be profound. Phone and water supplies can be disrupted for days, fires erupt, and even a small number of overpass collapses can snarl traffic for months. However, when one examines the collective responses of developed societies to major earthquake disasters in recent historic times, a somewhat surprising theme emerges: not only determination, but resilience; not only resilience, but acceptance; not only acceptance, but astonishingly, humor.   Elastic rebound is one of the most basic tenets of modern earthquake science, the term that scientists use to describe the build-up and release of energy along faults. It is also the best metaphor for societal responses to major earthquakes in recent historic times.   Using a number of pivotal and intriguing historic earthquakes as illustration, this book concludes with a consideration of projected future losses on an increasingly urbanized planet, including the near-certainty that a future earthquake will someday claim over a million lives. This grim prediction impels us to take steps to mitigate earthquake risk, the innately human capacity for rebound notwithstanding.”   ]]> Technology and Science Mon, 16 Sep 2019 13:33:31 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/281280/after-the-earth-quakes-a-practical-oxford-guide ‎‘The Solar Corona’ provides scientific answers for longstanding questions http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280652/the-solar-corona-provides-scientific-answers-for-longstanding-questions According to IBNA correspondent, ‘The Solar Corona’ which has been translated into Persian by Marjan Yusefzadeh Shabestari and released by Sefidsar Publishing is introduced: “Observations from the ground and space have advanced our knowledge of the solar corona dramatically over the last three decades. This textbook is the first to present this new understanding at a level appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers seeking an entry-point into the research literature. This timely volume presents a lucid and synthesized review of the latest observations of the solar corona and how they have advanced and shaped our understanding of coronal physics. This book provides a much-needed introduction to coronal physics for advanced students and researchers.   The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. Its diameter is about 1.39 million kilometers (864,000 miles), or 109 times that of Earth, and its mass is about 330,000 times that of Earth. It accounts for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. Roughly three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen (~73%); the rest is mostly helium (~25%), with much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron   The Sun is a G-type main-sequence star (G2V) based on its spectral class. As such, it is informally and not completely accurately referred to as a yellow dwarf (its light is closer to white than yellow). It formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of matter within a region of a large molecular cloud. Most of this matter gathered in the center, whereas the rest flattened into an orbiting disk that became the Solar System. The central mass became so hot and dense that it eventually initiated nuclear fusion in its core. It is thought that almost all stars form by this process. ‘The Solar Corona’ in Persian has been published in 176 pages and 1000 copies.   ]]> Technology and Science Fri, 13 Sep 2019 12:39:04 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280652/the-solar-corona-provides-scientific-answers-for-longstanding-questions ‎‘How the Zebra Got Its Stripes’ offers fresh evolutionary explorations‎ http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280630/how-the-zebra-got-its-stripes-offers-fresh-evolutionary-explorations According to IBNA correspondent, the book with the complete title: ‘How the Zebra Got Its Stripes: Darwinian Stories Told Through Evolutionary Biology’ has been translated into Persian by Kaveh Faizollahi and released by No Publishing in Tehran.                                                                 The book explains the intricacies of the animal kingdom through the lens of evolutionary biology: Why do giraffes have such long necks? Complex natural phenomena are explained in simple and at times comic terms, as Grasset turns evolutionary biology to the burning questions of the animal kingdom, from why elephants prefer dictators and buffaloes democracies, to whether the lion really is king.   The human is, of course, just another animal, and the author's exploration of two million years of human evolution shows how it not only informs our current habits and behavior, but also reveals that we are hybrids of several different species.   ‘How the Zebra Got Its Stripes: Darwinian Stories Told Through Evolutionary Biology’ in Persian has been published in 176 pages and 1100 copies.     ]]> Technology and Science Wed, 11 Sep 2019 12:29:46 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280630/how-the-zebra-got-its-stripes-offers-fresh-evolutionary-explorations ‎‘From Eden To Exile’ retells the history of the Old Testament http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280622/from-eden-to-exile-retells-the-history-of-old-testament According to IBNA correspondent, the book has been translated by Asghar Rastegar and released by Cheshmeh Publishing. The strength and brilliance of Rohl's narrative is his "New Chronology" for Egypt. He writes that the traditional chronology yields no evidence of the Jews' sojourn in Egypt, or the Exodus, or the Conquest, or even of the flourishing of the nation of Israel under David and Solomon. Rohl, based on new archeological and textual evidence, revises the chronology. He goes back and looks at the same places, but at different times, and finds countless confirmations of the details of the biblical account. His history of both Egypt and Israel is "satisfyingly supported by the stratigraphic record and colorfully enhanced by the contemporary texts of Israel's powerful neighbors. It provides a solid and ultimately believable historical foundation for the religious messages of the biblical text." The book uses illustrations and maps derived from satellite photography as well as stunning photographs of ancient artifacts. Rohl has a knack for taking the details of archeology and explaining sophisticated concepts and analyses in ways that a layman can easily understand. The result is an engaging book that will change the way you think about the Bible.   David Michael Rohl (born 12 September 1950) is an Egyptologist and former director of the Institute for the Study of Interdisciplinary Sciences (ISIS) who from the 1980s has put forward several unconventional theories revising the chronology of Ancient Egypt and Israel to form an alternative new chronology.   ]]> Technology and Science Fri, 06 Sep 2019 14:41:26 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280622/from-eden-to-exile-retells-the-history-of-old-testament Durkheim’s ideas on suicide to be reviewed in Tehran http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/280345/durkheim-s-ideas-on-suicide-to-be-reviewed-in-tehran According to IBNA correspondent, the meeting will be held by scientific department of Iranian Sociology Association. What does it mean for time to “flow"? Do we exist in time or does time exist in us? In lyric, accessible prose, Carlo Rovelli invites us to consider questions about the nature of time that continue to puzzle physicists and philosophers alike.   For most readers this is unfamiliar terrain. We all experience time, but the more scientists learn about it, the more mysterious it remains. We think of it as uniform and universal, moving steadily from past to future, measured by clocks. Rovelli tears down these assumptions one by one, revealing a strange universe where at the most fundamental level time disappears.   He explains how the theory of quantum gravity attempts to understand and give meaning to the resulting extreme landscape of this timeless world. Weaving together ideas from philosophy, science and literature, he suggests that our perception of the flow of time depends on our perspective, better understood starting from the structure of our brain and emotions than from the physical universe.     ]]> Technology and Science Thu, 15 Aug 2019 09:58:44 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/279615/italian-physicist-s-the-order-of-time-rendered-into-persian New volumes of the Harrison’s medical textbooks in Persian due http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/shortint/279601/new-volumes-of-the-harrison-s-medical-textbooks-in-persian-due According to IBNA correspondent, Salahi, the author and translator of over 60 medical books and head of the translation project ‘Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine’ (2018) said that as one of the main medical references for professionals and students, the book is being translated into Persian in 12 volumes. “By now, the parts Immune-Mediated, Inflammatory, and Rheumatologic Disorders; Disorders of the Kidney and Urinary Tract and Disorders of the Respiratory System have been translated into three volumes and published by Haidari Publishing,” he stated.   “The translation has almost been accomplished and the work is in the process of typing and editing. But practices based on this assumption have not yielded results consistent with evidence-based practice.   Using the work of Wittgenstein, John Heaton challenges this notion of theoretical authority by showing how it is that children come to be initiated into speaking and perceiving meaning. ‘Wittgenstein and Psychotherapy’ argues for a new understanding of therapy as an attempt by patients to express themselves thereby showing and saying what they have been unable to see or say and accepting that things in the world are not as fixed as they assume.   Therapists, like writers, may describe what is witnessed but this is of a very different order from explanations. This book critiques the conjectural leap from descriptions to theoretical systems made by Freud and others, a scientism that continues to give false validation to the myth that understanding people is the same as being an expert on the mind and brain.”   The meeting for reviewing ‘Wittgenstein and Psychotherapy’ is scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at 3 to 5 p.m.   ]]> Technology and Science Mon, 29 Jul 2019 10:26:52 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/naghli/278904/wittgenstein-and-psychotherapy-to-be-reviewed-in-literati-house Iranian scientific book among Springer’s most visited http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/278034/iranian-scientific-book-among-springer-s-most-visited According to IBNA correspondent, ‘Autonomous Guided Vehicles’ has been co-authored by Mohammad Saidi-Mehrabad, a faculty member of Tehran’s Elm-o San’at University and Hamed Fazlollahtabar, a faculty member of Damghan University. The book is introduced as: “A work which provides readers with extensive information on path planning optimization for both single and multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and discusses practical issues involved in advanced industrial applications of AGVs. After discussing previously published research in the field and highlighting the current gaps, it introduces new models developed by the authors with the goal of reducing costs and increasing productivity and effectiveness in the manufacturing industry. The new models address the increasing complexity of manufacturing networks, due for example to the adoption of flexible manufacturing systems that involve automated material handling systems, robots, numerically controlled machine tools, and automated inspection stations, while also considering the uncertainty and stochastic nature of automated equipment such as AGVs. The book discusses and provides solutions to important issues concerning the use of AGVs in the manufacturing industry, including material flow optimization with AGVs, programming manufacturing systems equipped with AGVs, reliability models, the reliability of AGVs, routing under uncertainty, and risks involved in AGV-based transportation.   ]]> Technology and Science Mon, 08 Jul 2019 12:53:12 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/278034/iranian-scientific-book-among-springer-s-most-visited Springer releases Iranian experts’ book on oil-paper insulation http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/278112/springer-releases-iranian-experts-book-on-oil-paper-insulation According to IBNA correspondent, “Quality Confirmation Tests for Power Transformer Insulation Systems” (2019) has been written by two Iranian academicians Behruz Vahidi and Ashkan Teimuri.      The book focuses on oil-paper insulation included in power transformers, especially for EHV and UHV transformers. In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, truth that is sorely lacking today. This book is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.   Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.   There are only so many things we can give a damn about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. In ‘The First Three Minutes: A Modern View Of The Origin Of The Universe’, the theoretical physicist Steven Weinberg explains what happened at the very beginning of the universe, and how we know, in this popular science classic. Our universe has been growing for nearly 14 billion years. But almost everything about it, from the elements that forged stars, planets, and lifeforms, to the fundamental forces of physics, can be traced back to what happened in just the first three minutes of its life. Weinberg describes in wonderful detail what happened in these first three minutes. It is a journey that begins with the Planck Epoch - the earliest period of time in the history of the universe - and goes through Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Hubble Red Shift, and the detection of the Cosmic Microwave Background. These incredible discoveries all form the foundation for what we now understand as the "standard model" of the origin of the universe. ‘The First Three Minutes’ examines not only what this model looks like, but also tells the exciting story of the bold thinkers who put it together. ‎‘The First Three Minutes: A Modern View Of The Origin Of The Universe’‎ in Persian has been published in 288 pages and 1500 copies.       ]]> Technology and Science Tue, 15 Jan 2019 13:46:47 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/270800/steven-weinberg-s-the-first-three-minutes-published Elsevier publishes Iranian geologist’s book http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/naghli/270354/elsevier-publishes-iranian-geologist-s-book According to IBNA correspondent, ‘Tectonic and Structural Framework of the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt’ is the latest volume in the Developments in Structural Geology and Tectonics series from Elsevier, Tectonic and Structural Framework of the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt is a collection of the most up-to-date research and developments in the unique tectonic and structural geology of the Zagros. Darwin spent most of that time on land investigating geology and making natural history collections while HMS Beagle surveyed and charted coasts.   He kept careful notes of his observations and theoretical speculations, and at intervals during the voyage, his specimens were sent to Cambridge together with letters including a copy of his journal for his family. Later, the scientist wrote his observations of the voyage in a travelogue which was later titled ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’.   The voyage laid the groundwork for Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. He later convinced most scientists that evolution as descent with modification was correct, and he was regarded as a great scientist who had revolutionized ideas.   The meeting, “Darwin the Globetrotter” will be held on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.       ]]> Technology and Science Mon, 26 Nov 2018 13:45:44 GMT http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/268417/darwin-s-voyages-to-be-considered-in-tehran ‎‘The Lacanian Subject’ rendered into Persian http://www.ibna.ir/en/doc/tolidi/265963/the-lacanian-subject-rendered-into-persian According to IBNA correspondent, ‘The Lacanian Subject: Between Language and Jouissance’ has been translated by Mohammad Ali Jafari and released by Qoqnous Publishing in Tehran.   This book presents the radically new theory of subjectivity found in the work of Jacques Lacan. Against the tide of post-structuralist thinkers who announce "the death of the subject," Bruce Fink explores what it means to come into being as a subject where impersonal forces once reigned, subjectify the alien roll of the dice at the beginning of our universe, and make our own knotted web of our parents' desires that led them to bring us into this world.   Fink Leads the reader step by step into Lacan's conceptual system to explain how one comes to be a subject--leading to psychosis. He presents Lacan's theory in the context of his clinical preoccupations.   Bruce Fink is a practicing Lacanian psychoanalyst, analytic supervisor, member of the Ecole de la Cause freudienne in Paris, and Professor of Psychology at Duquesne University.
