Text : According to IBNA correspondent, copyright law prevents using and publishing the intellectual, literary and art works without the permission of their authors. Though, Iran has taken concrete steps to protect the intellectual property rights, it has yet to join the Universal Copyright Convention. Intellectual property right is a main concern for people throughout the world and includes three basic challenges: the international challenge of copyright; the economic potential of industries involved in copyright activities; and protection of creative works, as the expert C. Trevor Clarke notified at the 4th Congress of Intellectual Property held April 26 in Tehran in 2014. Iran joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2001, and in 2005 approved Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration, an entity established to protect geographical names in relation with products, but has yet to join the Universal Copyright Convention. The Act of protecting the rights of the authors, composers and the artists passed in 1996 states that any work published in Iran, for the first time, is protected; however, it excludes those which are published abroad for the first time. This rule is derived from the principle of territorial protection of literary and artistic property right, says the Iranian expert Ladan Haidari. For these reasons, Iran s Ministry of Culture decided to begin close cooperation with WIPO and has held editions of National Conference on the Intellectual and Artistic Property Right in the country attended by international and local experts and officials of copyright law, a process which is facilitated by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known in Iran as (BARJAM).
