Bilingual version of 'The Little Black Fish' published

IBNA- The nostalgic Iranian children book 'The Little Black Fish' (1968) by the late ‎Iranian writer Samad Behrangi has been published as a bilingual English Persian ‎version.‎


According to IBNA correspondent, the book has been already translated into various languages such as English, Swedish, Italian, Turkish and so on. The new English translation of ‘The Little Black Fish’ has been carried out by Laila Ali-Madadi Zonouzi and released by Paida va Nahan Publishing in 500 copies.
 
First published by Iran's Center for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults in 1968, the new translation of The Little Black Fish into English by Tiny Owl with its award-winning original illustrations got first in David Cadji Newby's top 10 children's books list for 'The Guardian' in April 2015.
 
Earlier, the illustrations by Farshid Mesghali won several awards including the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1974.
 
The story is told through the voice of an old fish speaking to her 12,000 children and grandchildren. She describes the journey of a small black fish who leaves the safety of the local stream to venture into the world.
 
The path of the little fish leads down a waterfall and along the length of the river to the sea. Along the way, the fish meets several interesting characters, including a helpful lizard and the dreaded pelican.
 
With both wisdom and courage, the fish travels far and the tale eventually ends with the Little Black Fish setting a lasting example for others.
 
 Samad Behrangi was a teacher, social critic, folklorist, translator, and short story writer. He is ‎famous for his children's books.‎ His books typically portrayed the lives of the children of the urban poor and encouraged the individual to change his/ her circumstances by her own initiatives.
 
Apart from children's stories, he wrote many pedagogical essays and collected and published several samples of oral Azerbaijani literature. Behrangi also has a few Azeri translations from Persian poems by the great Iranian poets including Ahmad Shamlou, Forough Farrokhzad, and Mehdi Akhavan-Sales.
