Iran marks 24th anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s death

Every year, millions of Iranians from across the country travel to the south of the Iranian capital Tehran to pay homage to the late leader at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic.
IBNA: The anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s death, widely recognized as the symbol of the Islamic Revolution, is commemorated in many other countries as well.
He was named Man of the Year in 1979 by American newsmagazine TIME for his international influence and has been described as the "virtual face of Islam in Western popular culture.”
Childhood and Parents
Imam Khomeini was born in the town of Khomein, about 350 km south of Tehran in the central province, on September 24, 1902.
He was raised by his mother following the murder of his father Ayatollah Seyyed Mostafa Musavi in 1903.
Political Life before 1963
Known for his strong political views against the regime, the security agents of Reza Khan, the founder of the Pahlavi dynasty, were ordered to restrict Imam's activities. But Imam continued his gradual but firm effort to spread his enlightening message to masses.
After the death of Ayatollah Borujerdi, the paramount Shia leader of the time, Imam was chosen his successor by the Ulema and people.
On 3 June 1963 Imam made a historical speech against the dependence of the Shah's regime on foreign powers and its support of Israel. He also stressed on the role of the Ulema in society.
Imam was immediately arrested on June 5th. This sparked three days of major riots throughout Iran and led to the deaths of some 400. That event is now referred to as the Movement of 15 Khordad.
On June 3rd, 1989, Imam passed away. Iranians poured out into the cities and streets to mourn Imam Khomeini's death.
Imam Khomeini's Literary Works and Compilations
Imam Khomeini has penned scores of books on ethics, mysticism, Jurisprudence, principles, politics and social issues. Many of them have been published.
In addition to his scientific works, Imam Khomeini has rewritten a number of unpublished treatises by other learned men. Some of the works of Imam, are written in a specialized manner the understanding of which, is not possible without help by the exegesis of the experts in those lines, other works are written in a more simple style.
