Production of Native Books in the field of media requires full domination

In the meeting of "Surveying the Condition of Book Publication in the field of Communication and Media" Mahdi Mohsenian Rad emphasized on the necessity of localizing books in the field of Communication and Media and said: production of native books requires domination and pain. It does by no means match with the "give and pass" approach, common in our universities.

IBNA: According to House of Literati News Staff for the 25th Tehran International Book Fair the meeting of "Surveying the Condition of Book Publication in the field of Communication and Media" was held on Sunday, May 6, 2012; with Mehdi Mohsenian Rad, Mas'oud. Kothari,Ali Asghar Fahimifar and Ali Forouzfar in the House of Literati.

At first, Mohsenian Rad expressing that part of every science is its publication, which is in turn, depend on the extent to which that science has been sunk in the society said: in this regards we began too late. For example, in 1919 when books of journalism were published in the school of journalism in London, we were living in the Conditional period.

He continued: The first 85-page book in this field was as an academic dissertation and it took too long until an academic book called "Human Communication" was published in this area. So, we have had much of lags in this regard.

This professor of communication added: moreover, the media atmosphere in Iran is different from that in the West and translation can scarcely help in this filed, so we need to publish native books on media and producing native works requires full domination and pain. It does by no means match with the "Give and Pass" approach, common in the universities.

The faculty member for the University of Imam Sadegh (AS) assessed the published sources in this area as positive and said: that, to what extend these sources are matched to the needs of society is something to be seen. Unfortunately, a research conducted on all the books available during the past 45 years of communication instructions in this country indicated the educational level on Social-Political Criticism is below 1% within these books.

Referring to the lack of native theories on communication in Iran, Fahimifar, the faculty member for University of Tarbiyat Modarres said: there are right now 12 approaches in the field of communication each are based on a particular paradigm. By the coming of technology and in the outset of the modern world, the traditional system of communication common among us were abruptly subjected to changes, but we never study to investigate the extend to which this modern communicational system has dominated on the Warp and woof of our thoughts.

He emphasized: In this area, we need to recognize the ideological principles underlying the traditional system of communication and then to define it in comparison with that of the West grown up within capitalist context. Today, a vacancy for communicational theories is felt in our country, and in confront with the West communicational system these gaps should be recognized to reproduce a new communicational system.

Then the professor noted that, philosophical studies have a short background in communication field and said: our communicational knowledge is mostly based on journalism, but other media such as Cinema, TV and Internet have scarcely been studied in this regard.

He continued: moreover, due to immaturity of the young science in Iranian society; communicational studies have not been common, and this in turn, has indeed caused the risk of investment to be increased in this field.

Fahimifar explained: to have a significant share from the modern world's idea-making, it is necessary to start translation movement and then to reinforce the additional facilities in order for this section to be developed as much as possible.

In another part of this meeting, Kothari, Tehran University faculty member referred to the two damages in this field and said: One the damages lie in the scientific publication of books in the field of communication and media. When we were students, there were several professors who wrote limited sources, so there was no competition among them. But, unfortunately, we hurried into the space of "Child democracy", so today, every individual writes a book!

This professor of communication emphasized on the book specializing in this area and added: before this, knowledge of communication was limited, but today it needs professional sources, because general books cannot fulfill the needs of addressee in this area. 

He continued: In the past, we had a limited imagination about communication, but today this attitude has changed; and the authors and professors remained behind. Both author as well as book is becoming old hurriedly, since communication is changing hurriedly too. Thus, those books should be compiled which are updated enough to response the addressee's increasing needs.

Kothari noted that the damages of this area have led in generating ignorance, and explained: the absence of criteria in this regard not only didn't led in science production, but it rather let some books and articles to be produced containing raw or half-baked materials which help merely to grow ignorance among society.

Tehran University faculty member criticized the flow of "book making" common in the country and said: "book making" has spoiled the prestige of science and publishers should implement some policies in this regard. Producing an encyclopedia on media and communication will help in this part. We also need those books dealing with the subject in the form of case study. We don't need just a text books to teach; rather we need new textbooks in which the A to Z of this science is introduced thoroughly.

Mohsenian Rad complained: why the experts do not enter into the field of media? And he explained that there is a problem in the publication of media related books that is how much the addressees need these information and related books? According to a research I conducted in 1990, only 6% of those educated in this field were working in the media. Another study conducted in1994 indicated that only 11% of those who work in the media are graduated in this field. Now the question here is, what is the use of so many books written on the issue and which group of addressees they are written for?

He stressed: the "Offer and Demand" relationship is very important, and if demand is provided, publication will be thrived as well.

In another part of his speech, Fahimi also referred to the publishers' economic system and said: this system is also subjected to many challenges in the country, and in case the play rules be clear, and are not affected by temporary managements, most of our problems will be solved.

At the end, Kothari also provided some suggestions in order for the area to be more flourished and said: Publishers have to help increasing book quality for example by making it pictorial and etc. Moreover, every publisher should have a careful database indexing its sources, since sometimes some references are given in a book which is of no real existence! We are obligated to prevent any error to enter history.

He added: publishers should erase the traditional picture of so co-called "Precious Book" from their minds, no doubt any content needs a package, but it is the coherence and the harmony between components which adds to the book preciousness.

In the ending section of this meeting, present experts emphasized greatly on the necessity of careful control on scientific, technical and content edition of the written works.
